Rob Porter
Rob Porter has dedicated four decades to the sport of wrestling as an elite athlete, championship coach, mentor, and statewide leader whose influence has shaped generations of wrestlers in Illinois and beyond. A graduate of Mahomet-Seymour High School, Porter was one of the state’s premier competitors during the early 1980s under legendary HOF coach Marty Williams. A team captain, he helped lead Mahomet-Seymour to the 1983 IHSA individual state championship and the inaugural IHSA Dual Team State Championship in 1984. Individually, Porter placed third in the state in 1983 before capturing the 1984 IHSA state championship at 105 pounds with a 41-2 record. He became an Illinois Junior Freestyle Champion and was named a Scholastic Coach Magazine High School All-American.
Porter continued his wrestling career at Edinboro University, where he became a four-year letter winner and two-times NCAA Division I National Qualifier. Nationally ranked at 126 pounds during the 1986-87 seasons, he established himself among the nation’s elite collegiate wrestlers while building the competitive foundation that would later define his coaching career.
Porter continued to compete into his late 50’s, winning 12 USAW National Championships in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco, twice winning the Triple Crown (2008 and 2010). He was a FILA Veteran’s World Bronze Medalist, 63kg, 2001 and Veteran’s World Gold Medalist, 63 kg, 2010.
As a coach, Porter built a remarkable career leading successful programs at Mahomet-Seymour, Crook County High School in Oregon, and Naperville Central High School. His overall coaching record exceeded 400 dual meet victories, and his teams qualified for the IHSA Dual Team State Tournament nine times. At Mahomet-Seymour alone, he compiled a 254-44-3 record while coaching 32 state place winners and eight individual state champions. His wrestlers included future NCAA champion John Lockhart, Junior National champion Ryan Berger, and World Cadet champion Mary Kelly.
Beyond coaching, Porter has become one of the most respected leaders in Illinois wrestling administration. As an executive board member and former president of the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association, he played a critical role in organizing the statewide IWCOA postseason tournament series during the cancellation of the 2021 IHSA season. His service has included youth wrestling leadership, official’s clinics, girls wrestling development, and countless organizational responsibilities that have strengthened wrestling statewide.
Porter’s accomplishments have earned him induction into the IWCOA Hall of Fame in 2011, Mahomet-Seymour High School Hall of Fame honors in 2018, IHSA State Tournament Grand Marshal, IWCOA Person of the Year, Board Member of the Year, and National Wrestling Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year honors. His lifelong dedication to wrestling continues to leave a lasting impact on athletes, coaches, and the Illinois wrestling community.
