Zachary Sanders

University of Minnesota bound Zach Sanders from Wabasha-Kellogg High School in Wabasha, Minnesota is the national winner of the 2007 Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award. The Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award recognizes the premier student-wrestler in the country based equally upon outstanding wrestling success, scholastic achievement and citizenship.

Coached by his father Ron, Sanders won five Minnesota High School State Championships, compiling a career record of 223-5. He scored a come-from-behind win in the finals of the 2007 National Senior High School Championships, solidifying his ranking as the nation's top wrestler at 119 pounds. He was honored in 2006 as a member of the Asics All-America First Team and was recently named Mr. Minnesota High School Wrestler, presented by the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association to the senior that best exemplifies the highest ideals of high school wrestling in Minnesota.

An accomplished freestyle wrestler, Sanders has won national championships in both the Cadet and Junior age groups.

He is also no slouch in the classroom, maintaining a 3.58 grade point average. He serves as an assistant coach for the elementary school wrestling program and has officiated at several youth tournaments in Wabasha. He has accumulated many hours of community service through the Kellogg Legion and the Faith Lutheran Church in Wabasha.
