Ron Bowes
Ron's involvement in wrestling began in 1954 as a seventh grader in the Lock Haven (PA) High School program where he became a three-year varsity starter. graduating in 1960. His college wrestling participation began at Lycoming College and continued at Lock Haven State College.
In 1967 he began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring. MD. The following year he was interim head coach at JFK. In 1971 he founded the Thomas S. Wootton High School (Rockville, MD) wrestling program where he was head coach until 1981. The varsity team record was 80 wins, 24 losses and 2 tics. There was one region team title. one individual Maryland State champion and 3 regional champion wrestlers. After assisting at Seneca Valley 1981-82 he returned to Wootton as assistant coach in 1982-88. In 1988 he was selected to teach and establish the wrestling program at the newly opened Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg.
The Quince Orchard record for his five years of coaching was 55 wins. 8 losses (5 in the initial season) and 2 ties. The Quince Orchard team won 3 Montgomery County team championships, 3 dual team championships, 3 Maryland Region II championships and the team placed 3rd in the MPSSA Tournament three times and fourth once. Quince Orchard wrestlers won 3 Maryland State individual championships. 14 Region Il championships and 15 Montgomery County championships. Six of those were in 1992 establishing a Montgomery County record. During this time Quince Orchard had a 43-dual meet win streak Arundel Tournament championships
Upon retiring from Montgomery County public Schools in 1966, Ron Retured to Lock haven. PA where he served as the President of the Lock Haven University Wrestling club until 2002. He presently serves on the LHU Foundation board and is chair of its Athletic Commitee. Currentiy he also provides support and serves on the Mat Town USA Wrestling board of Directors. Mat - Town is a chub directed by Neil Tumer that provides wrestling instruction, training and financial support for central Pennsyvania wrestlers from elementary school through college. A long time member or the National Wrestling Coaches Association Ron was a significant partner in the NWCA's Coaching Development Program.
