James Schartner
Jim began wrestling in 1965 as a sophomore at Robert E. Peary High School in Rockville, Maryland. His high school coach was Ed Burles who welcomed the five foot 100 lb. sophomore with a big smile and hug. He continued wrestling at Western Maryland College in Westminster, Maryland from 1968-72. His college wrestling coach Dr. Sam Case made the sport of wrestling something that Jim wanted to share with others. He was a member of the WMC Mason Dixon Championship teams of 1969-71 placing third at 118 bs. in the conference championships each year.
In 1972, he began coaching wrestling at the Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind introducing wrestling to the Deaf students for the at the school. In 1974, with the assistance of many people he started the wrestling program at the Maryland School for the Deaf in Frederick, Maryland. He coached at M.S.D. from 1974-1992. During those years he learned valuable lessons about how wrestling can shape young athletes lives.
Some highlights included: three National Deaf Prep Championships, two National Deaf Prep Wrestlers of the Year, over 50 National Deaf Prep All-Americans, four Deaf Olympians, three Deaf Olympic medalists, and five Eastern School for the Deaf wrestling championships. During this time he coached in three World Games for the Deaf or Deaf Olympics: 1985 Los
Angeles, California, 1989 Christchurch, New Zealand, and 1993 Sofía, Bulgaria. He was team director or chief of the delegation for the USA Cadet World Team in 1991 for both the freestyle and Greco-Roman teams. The Greco team won the world championships and the freestyle team placed third. He established the Frederick International Wrestling Club in 1986 which continues today to promote freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
He served as head coach of the Maryland National Freestyle and Greco-Roman teams from 1996-2008. Through the efforts of many talented coaches some highlights include: over ten cadet and junior national champions, over 50 junior and cadet national All-Americans, two top ten finishes, and two team spirit awards.
In 1992, Jim began coaching at Middletown High School in Middletown, Maryland. He has guided the team with the assistance of several fine coaches since the second varsity year of the program. During this time the sport of wrestling has been a tool to help shape the lives of many young athletes. He continues to coach at Middletown High School. Highlights include: six Maryland state champions (two being two time state champions), 23 Maryland state place winners, 16 consecutive seasons with a winning record, 15 consecutive seasons with a top three finish in the
Frederick County Wrestling championships, and one high school All-American. In 2008, Jim began wrestling competitively again in the USA Wrestling Veterans division., With the assistance of family and friends, he has placed 2" in the FILA Veterans World Greco Roman Championships 2009 in Kouvola, Finland, and 8th in the FILA World Veterans Greco-Roman Championships 2010 in Belgrade, Serbia. He is a two time National Veterans Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion 2010-2011 at 58kg, National Veterans
Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Runner-up 2009 at 58 kgs, and National Veterans Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling third place 2008 at 63kg.
