John Lowe
Like a grappling Johnny Appleseed, John Vincent Lowe IV spread wrestling across Baltimore County.
Following his graduation from Towson State University in 1951, Lowe made was the driving force to pioneer the interscholastic program in Baltimore County to include wrestling part of his Master’s in Education project while doing post grad studies at Western Maryland College. He accomplished both endeavors in 1956.
He continued his quest to include junior varsity wrestling in 1961 he instituted the firs Baltimore County Tournament, serving as its first director. Lowe coached 30 yrs. in the Baltimore County System, compiling a 211-64-1 record and never having a losing season. his 211 dual meet wins was a major accomplishment as in his years of coaching a teams schedule only included ten dual matches a season
He coached four wrestlers to five Maryland State Titles and coached Mike Calvin to an undefeated career from 1967-1969. Calvin won three Baltimore County Titles and won District titles the first two years of the tournament was held. There was no state tournament at this time.
