Anthony Schettino

Anthony Schettino started wrestling in fourth grade for the Port Youth Activities wrestling program in Port Washington, New York, and his involvement with the sport has never stopped.

He continued wrestling at Sousa/Weber Middle School in Port Washington before moving on to wrestle at Paul D. Schreiber High School, under the tutelage of coach Robert Busby, also a Lifetime Service to Wrestling award recipient. Schettino was a captain, four-time varsity starter, four-time all-conference, conference champion and outstanding wrestler, all-county and two-time program outstanding wrestler. In addition, he wrestled freestyle for the PYA Wrestling Club, earning all-state honors, and was a two-time member of the varsity football team.

Schettino attended NCAA Division II Southern Connecticut State University and wrestled at 118 and 126 pounds. He was a starter as a freshman and sophomore and competed in the NCAA qualifier. After discussing an assistant coaching position with Busby, he transferred to Long Island University and began his coaching career at his alma mater. Schettino completed his bachelor's degree in elementary education while coaching the high school wrestling and middle school football teams in Port Washington. He then accepted a position at the Green Vale School in Old Brookville, New Yor, where he continues to teach technology/STEM while coaching football and lacrosse for the past 26 years.

While Schettino is a multi-sport coach, he has been a dedicated high school wrestling coach at his alma mater for the past 31 years and remains active today. Beginning as an assistant to Busby, he learned about coaching mentoring and wrestling from a man who had made those attributes his life's passion. When Busby considered retirement, he knew Schettino's dedication and aptitude for coaching would ensure the program would continue to thrive and succeed.

Since taking over the program, Schettino has 291 wins and had the pleasure of coaching both his cousin, Thomas Murray, and his son, Tyler Schettino, who was also a team captain and all-county wrestler for Port Washington just like his father. Anthony has coached four Nassau County Conference team champions, 38 all-county wrestlers, 11 Nassau County tournament finalists, three Nassau County champions, including two in 2015, and four all-state wrestlers. He coached Matt Castillo, who was voted to receive the Section 8 Sportsmanship of the Year award.

Schettino has also coached youth wrestling for 28 years and has served as the PYA wrestling director for 16 years. He had the privilege of coaching the PYA program with Busby and Anthony's uncle, Christs Murray, another standout wrestler in Port Washington. Anthony coached the Walt Whitman youth wrestling program for three years while his son was a member. He founded the Port Wrestling Booster Club and was the Nassau County Rookie Coach of the Year and a two-time Nassau County Conference Coach of the Year. The Long Island Wrestling Officials Association presented him with their sportsmanship of the year award.

A member of the PYA and Schreiber High School Halls of Fame, Schettino founded and was the owner and operator of Advantage Wrestling LLC, which brought many elite-level camps, clinics and clinicians to Long Island. He also served as secretary for Section 11 New York USA Wrestling for three years, and currently serves as both league captain and vice president of Nassau County Section 8.

As recently as 2014, Schettino was actively competing in freestyle wrestling at the New York Athletic Club. He has competed in open and veteran tournaments, earning All-America honors in freestyle with a third-place finish at the veterans national tournament in 2013, including a victory over the 2012 national champion. Schettino capped off his career competing for USA Wrestling at the Veterans World Championships in Sarajevo, Bosnia.

Schettino currently resides in Port Washington, New York, with his wife, Renee, son Tyler and daughter Lily. Lily and Tyler are both wrestlers.

For his selfless dedication to so many crucial aspects of our sport, the Downstate Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame is pleased to present Anthony Schettino with the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award.
