Michael was born in Chula Vista, California, but later moved to Iowa and wrestled at New Hampton High School. He was a varsity starter in 1975 and 1976. His career record was 35-17-1 and he was a two-time Northeast Iowa Conference place winner. In 1975, Michael was a Sectional Champion, District 3rd place winner, and a State Tournament qualifier at 145 lbs.

Michael was a member of North Iowa Officials Association from 1995-2018, a member of Eastern Iowa Officials Association from 2000-2018, and currently a member of IWCOA since 1983. He was a volunteer for the State Dual and Traditional State Tournament weigh-ins. He has been a mentor for new and inexperienced officials and recently been an evaluator of Iowa wrestling officials.

Michael and his wife Sharon have two adult sons, Craig and Justin. Michael comes with high recommendations from Greg Becker, Bruce Ennen, Travis Pike, and Brian Gray.
