Lorianna Piestewa
Lorianna Piestewa, from Gallup, N.M., began her wrestling journey in the eighth grade, inspired by watching her father and brother compete. During her four years at Hiroshi Miyamura High School, she made history as a four-time state champion, completing her high school career with a remarkable legacy at the 2024 Wrestling State Championships.
Lorianna credits her success to hard work and the unwavering support of her family and coaches. “It’s hard work going out there every day and giving it my best,” she shared. Her dedication extends beyond the mat, with a rigorous schedule that includes early morning weightlifting, a work-study program, school, and youth wrestling coaching—often keeping her busy from 3:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Her father, Adam Piestewa, described her as driven and disciplined, saying, “It’s a lifestyle she chose, and I’m hoping it carries her a long way.” Lorianna herself acknowledged the mental and physical challenges of wrestling, emphasizing that every second on the mat counts.
Looking ahead, Lorianna has signed to wrestle at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, where she plans to study exercise science while competing at the collegiate level. “When I visited, it really felt like home,” she said.
Miyamura wrestling coach Nate Sellers, who has worked with Lorianna throughout her career, praised her natural work ethic and relentless determination. “She’s one of those athletes you get every few years who just stands out. I’m looking forward to seeing her make an impact at the college level,” he said.
Lorianna Piestewa’s achievements on and off the mat serve as an inspiration, proving that hard work and passion can lead to greatness.
