Ed Boxwell

After initiating the first wrestling program in Howard County, at Howard High in 1963, Coach Ed Boxwell moved on to Atholton High in 1966, where he started its first wrestling program. Coach Boxwell began coaching after participating in a very active and successful wrestling career of his own, beginning at Southern High in Baltimore, and then moving on to the University of Maryland. Under Coach Sully Krause, before graduating in 1960.

During the many years that he has been associated with wrestling, Coach Boxwell has served in quite a few diverse capacities: initiating high school wrestling tournaments and programs, serving as the state tournament director, serving as coordinator for regional and dual meet tourneys, and serving on the state wrestling committee.

It has been his sincere dedication to the hundreds of young men and women, and the influence he has had upon them, that has provided Coach Boxwell with his outstanding success. Not only did Atholton High elect him to its Hall of Fame in 1990, but to honor him for his many successful endeavors, Howard High, in 2006, designated its scholar/athlete award as the Ed Boxwell Award.

An added accomplishment, for which Coach Boxwell can take a great deal of pride, has been his service in the 29th Division of the Maryland National Guard from 1953 through 1986 when he retired as a Lt. Col. of Infantry.

Although Ed Boxwell is retired, he and his wife, Caroline Mitchell-Boxwell,currently live in Silver Springs where he continues to be very active as the State Commander of the Military Order of Foreign Wars, and a member of the National Wrestling Coaches Association plus a number of Maryland wrestling Associations.
