Ron Steube

Ron Steube was born in Woodbury, NJ in 1951. He wrestled at Roxbury High School in Succasunna, NJ graduating in 1969. After high school, Ron continued his education at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL where he initiated the school’s first wrestling program. He represented Huntingdon in various invitational and open tournaments from 1971 to 1973. Ron received a BS in Physical Education from Huntingdon in 1974 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Secondary Education in 1979 from Troy University.

After college, Ron continued wrestling, competing in freestyle tournaments including the Peach State Opens and the 1976 Southeast Olympic Trials. In 1973, Ron was hired as the Head Wrestling Coach at Central Alabama Academy in Montgomery, Alabama, where he compiled a record of 57-3-1 with 44 consecutive wins. Ron’s teams were APSA state champions in 1973, 1974, 1975, 1976, 1978 and runners-up in 1977.  At Central Alabama Academy,  he coached 42 individual state champions. In 1978 Ron became the first junior college wrestling coach in Alabama at Chattahoochee Valley Community College in Phenix City, Alabama. His teams were 23-3 and the 1979-1980 team finished the season ranked 10th in the nation. The 1978-79 and 1979-80 teams finished as NJCAA Southeast Region Runners-up and the 1979-80 team finished third in the Mid-South tournament. Ron was named 1978 Mid-South Coach of the Year and was 1978-79, 1979-80 NJCAA Southeast Region Coach of the Year. He coached 10 NJCAA national qualifiers and 3 NJCAA Southeast Region Champions.

Ron officiated numerous wrestling meets and tournaments on the junior high, high school and collegiate levels for fifteen years, including district and state championship tournaments. In 1980 he officiated the first ESPN televised match, Auburn vs Tennessee. He served as a clinician at numerous summer camps in addition to starting the first Huntingdon College Wrestling Clinic and The Montgomery Takedown Club. Since 1986, he has volunteered in numerous capacities in the wrestling community, ranging from being an assistant coach, to tournament director to working tables at tournaments.

Ron retired from Virco, Inc. after twenty six years as a sales representative. He and his wife, Jackie, have one daughter, Lanie Brazell. She and her husband Craig have three sons. Ron continues to enjoy fishing, playing golf and spending time with his three grandsons. He still remains involved in the wrestling community.
