February 01, 1948 - April 03, 2023

Coach Roy Michael, a 1966 graduate of Rivesville High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Fairmont State College, where he was the throwing quarterback on the school's 1967 NAIA National Championship football team.

Coach Michael began his teaching and coaching career at Mannington High School, where he instituted the school's first wrestling team. In less than a decade he produced two West Virginia A/AA State Championship wrestling teams (1978 & 1979). Coach Michael was voted by his peers as the 1979 West Virginia A/AA Wrestling Coach of the Year.

When Mannington consolidated with three other schools to form North Marion, Coach Michael kept the wrestling tradition going in full speed. His 1998 squad won the West Virginia AAA State Championship. Coach Michael was also named the West Virginia AAA Coach of the Year in 1998.

By winning state championships at Mannington and North Marion, Coach Roy Michael became only the third coach in the state's history to win state mat championships in two different classes.

During his 33-year tenure as a head wrestling coach, Roy Michael not only won three state championships for Mannington and North Marion, but also produced 23 individual state champions.

Roy and his devoted wife, Janis, have three children - Michele, Jay and Misti. They also have three grandchildren - Gage, Gene, and Anna.
