Walter Reed, SR
Walter Reed was born in Bedford, Pennsylvania on December 21,1946. Walter graduated from Everett Southern High School In 1964 and wrestled in the 133 lbs. weight class from 1961 to 1964, for Coach Robert Clark. He was a district champion in 1964 at the tournament held in the Hollidaysburg, Pa. Following high school Walter Joined the United States Marine Corps and served on active duty from 1964 thru 1968. Walter is a Vietnam Veteran and earned prestigious awards, during this time. Following active duty he served in the Marine Corps active reserves until 1971. Walter also boxed for the Marine Corps and actually turned pro in Baltimore for 2 years, competing at Steel Workers Hall in Dundalk.
Following honorable discharge and service, he joined the Baltimore City Police Department until 1975, when he started his own business, Reeds Pest Control, which has been a successful company for him over the past 29 years. Walter returned to the sport of wrestling in 1969 as an official, when he joined the Maryland Scholastic Association that became part of the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association in 1971.
He has been officiating ever since, and is highly recognized as one of the very best officials throughout the state of Maryland, by his peers and coaches he has served the past 35 years. He has been selected to officiate the MPSSAA State Tournament and the .be Independent School Touraments11 times and the MIAA Independent School Tournament 3 times.
Walter was recognized with the MPSSAA Service Award in 2001 and received the Maryland Wrestling Officials Association Award, for his outstanding achievement in the sport of wrestling. Walter also has always taken time to serve the Baltimore community and spent endless time and effort to help kids in wrestling.
He was a volunteer assistant coach at Walbrook High School with Dave Lang and John Hammond from 1972-1978, assisted Dave White with the Carver Vo-Technical program from 1980-1983, head coach at Forest Park High School from 1990-1992 where he had his first MSA Champion.
Away from the sport of wrestling, Walter is a father of two children and fourteen grandchildren, and has two step daughters, His daughter, Denise Michelle, is a graduate of Baltimore Polytechnic, Coppin State College, and University of Maryland. His son, Walter Reed, Jr., was a four time Maryland Scholastic wrestling champion, and in 1991 won the National High School Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pa. He is considered a role model by his peers and one of the most giving fortunate, and that is more important to personally that all his achievements.
