Jon Lane

Jon Lane was a two-time Washington State Wrestling Champion at 136 pounds in 1964 and 1965. He compiled a 44-3 high school varsity record. In 1965 he was Team Captain, won the Coach's Award and was Senior Class President. At Big Bend Community College he was a two-time state champion and won the National Junior College Wrestling Championship in 1967 at 152 pounds. Jon wrestled at the University of Washington and Central Washington University where he was an Evergreen Conference Champion. Lane was a wrestling official for over 20 years and concluded his officiating career by refereeing the 1990 state tournament. Jon was the head wrestling coach at Pullman High School from 1970 to 1972 and then returned to Bib Bend Community College where he was the head wrestling coach for three years. He left teaching for four years and then returned to the Moses Lake School District where he taught and was head wrestling coach at Chief Moses Junior High School and ten years as an assistant at Moses Lake High School. Jon currently coaches the Mat Muscle Wrestling program in Moses Lake. Jon completed thirty years as a teacher, coach and administrator in public schools. He was inducted into the Moses Lake High School Hall of Fame in its inaugural class in 2002. In 1996 there was a school shooting at Frontier Middle School in Moses Lake where a teacher and two students were killed. Jon's action may have saved the lives of the sixteen students that were held hostage. For his heroic action in the face of danger Jon was awarded the Carnegie Hero Award. He has been recognized as the Moses Lake Citizen of the Year, received the Robert Connelly Heroism Award and the Paul Harris Award and was presented the President's Award for the Washington State Retired Teachers Association. Jon has been involved on the national level with efforts to reduce school violence. He has spoken at conferences and hearings in Texas, Virginia, Washington State and Washington D.C.. Jon has been active in his community having served as chairman of the Moses Lake Parks and Recreation commission and is currently on the Moses Lake City Council. Jon has been married for 36 years to his wife Carol. He has three daughters, Annette, Deborah and Monica. Jon and Carol have six wonderful grandchildren. Jon believes everyone needs to make their corner of the world the best possible and he is doing just that with his dedication to kids.
