Terry Stanton
Lifetime Service During the early 1950s Terry Stanton wrestled for legendary coach Al Hurley at New Trier High School. It was in this era that New Trier wrestling was at its zenith "” and Terry Stanton played no small part in this period. In 1952, in Terry's junior year, he qualified for the State Finals at 145 lbs. where he finished third. He was one of three medalist for a team that would ultimately take home the third place trophy. In his senior year, Terry, moving up a weight to 154lbs.; this time he finished second. He was one of four medalists (one third placer, a second and two champions) for a New Trier team which took first place in the tournament for the third time in four years. Terry was the Captain of this State Championship Team. Upon graduating from New Trier High School Terry attended Miami of Ohio University. In 1957, his senior year, Terry won the Mid American Conference Championship at 167 lbs. After a stint in the Marine Corps, Terry settled permanently in the Chicagoland area in 1960. Terry was to spend the next decade concentrating on establishing himself in the business community. It was during the early 1970s that his enthusiasm for the sport was rekindled. Undoubtedly the experience of his three sons "” all of whom participated on both kid clubs and high school teams "” had an impact. Observing the benefits that were produced through discipline, sacrifice, commitment to team and goal-setting (attributes common to the successful wrestler) encouraged Terry to bring the sport of wrestling to as many people as possible. Consequently, Terry has been instrumental in the resurrection of the Mayor Daley Wrestling Club and assisted in its merger into the Wildcat Wrestling Club. He also created a strategy for recruiting collegiate post graduates to settle in the Chicago area and train for USA Teams. Under this strategy individuals like Jim Scheer, Al Freeman, Rich Townsell, Brad Traviolia and Shannyn Gillespie were able to pursue their wrestling careers. Additionally, he has developed a graduate program for those who desired to continue graduate school as well as train for national and international competition. Terry has played a significant role in raising funds for this program as well as finding job opportunities for these candidates. Of utmost importance to Terry's efforts is the "Beat the Streets" project. For the last eight to ten years Terry has worked tirelessly promoting this project. His love for the sport of wrestling as it relates to preparing disadvantaged youngsters for their future lives has led to the development of programs in the Northern Illinois area as well as in Washington, D. C. and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Essential to the success of "Beat the Streets" is Terry's effectiveness in making plans work and in the recruitment of key people to this worthy cause.
