Larry Bernard
MEDAL OF COURAGE Larry wrestled for four years at Carl Sandburg High School; he alsoparticipated in the baseball program for two years. After his graduation in 1968 he attended Western Illinois University where hewrestled for two years, graduating in 1972. He received his graduate degree from Indiana University shortly thereafter. His first teaching assignment was at Romeoville High School in 1972 where he taught Physical Education and Drivers' Education. Additionally, Larry coached football, wrestling and baseball. Larry also became involved as a registered IHSA wrestling official where his expertise would earn him numerous Regional and Sectional assignments. In 1974 Larry moved to Bolingbrook High School and assume similar responsibilities. In 1977 Larry was named to hiscurrent position at Bolingbrook "” Athletic Director. It was in October of 1977 that Larry was involved in a tragic automobile accident. The accident left Larry with a broken neck and a severed spinal cord. For the remainder of his life Larry would require the use of a wheelchair. The rehabilitation process was exceptionally challenging and frustrating. Coping with the physical as well as the emotional stress was very difficult. Larry came to rely upon the support of his friends and family to get through these challenges. During this period Larry would frequently draw upon his wrestling experiences to inspire and to motivate him. Thoughts like "I can do this. This is just another tough opponent; you've had them before," and "Win this one in overtime," buoyed Larry through the difficult times. To Larry there was no doubt that his wrestling background provided him with the opportunity to return to a near-normal life-style, not only at home, but also in the workplace. Following the completion of his rehabilitation Larry returned to Bolingbrook High School, assuming a role similar to the one he had left &mdash Driver Education Instructor and Athletic Director. It was not the pre-accident role of coach or wrestling official, but it did keep him close to high school athletics "” and the sport of wrestling. Twenty-six years later Larry is still enjoying the responsibility of the position that was given to him by his school district's administration and its respective Board of Education. Larry has fulfilled his responsibilities admirably, honoring the confidence that his school district had in him. Much of Larry's courage comes from a personal inner strength that, in part, was honed through athletics "”especially wrestling. For his fortitude and determination in dealing with adversity, we are proud to present Larry with this award.
