Johnstown celebrates “Carlton Haselrig Day”

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - Carlton Haselrig knew that he was being honored before Greater Johnstown’s wrestling match with Richland on Tuesday night, but he didn’t know exactly what that would entail.
The Johnstown graduate, who will be inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in June, was stunned when he learned that the City of Johnstown had proclaimed Tuesday to be “Carlton Haselrig Day.”
“It left me speechless,” Haselrig said after a banner was unveiled that would hang in Garfield Gymnasium at Johnstown Middle School, home of the Trojans wrestling team. “I didn’t know all that was going to happen. I seen some posters up, but I didn’t know I’d be honored in that fashion. I’m totally honored and lost for words.”
Haselrig won a PIAA championship in 1984 – wrestling on his own because the Trojans didn’t have a team – and became the only wrestler ever to win six NCAA titles – three in Division II and three in Division I – during his career at Pitt-Johnstown, where he went 143-2-1.
