Introduction

History of the United States Wrestling Federation/USA Wrestling

The 1950s and 60s was a time of tremendous dissatisfaction with the National Governing Body (NGB) for many Olympic sports. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU), as an “umbrella” organization, had become the NGB for these Olympic sports over the time and as such controlled international competition in these sports abroad and within the United States. Because of the number of Olympic sports for which the AAU was the NGB, the AAU also controlled the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), and thus controlled the participation of  U.S. athletes in Olympic competition. However, as coaches and athletes became more aware of the AAU’s shortcomings, they started movements within their performance in the international competition. Wrestling was one of the many Olympic sports that the AAU controlled and this is the story of how USA Wrestling came into being and gained the privilege of serving as the National Governing Boday for wrestling.
