National Wrestling Hall of Fame to launch Latino American Wrestling Experience Exhibit at NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City

Stillwater, Okla. - The National Wrestling Hall of Fame will launch its third exhibit on “Diversity & Inclusion” at the NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City, March 20-22, 2014.

“The Latino American Wrestling Experience is a story about one of the most vibrant ethnic groups of our sport’s legacy,” said Executive Director Lee Roy Smith.

Accompanying the exhibit will be an online digital booklet that pays tribute to a cross-section of Latino Americans who have made their mark on the sport at the high school, collegiate and international levels of wrestling. The booklet will be accessible to the public on the Hall of Fame website beginning March 28.

“We want people to be able to view the booklet as they wish,” Smith said.

NCAA fans attending the tournament will be treated to a forum and visual display on the Latino American Wrestling Experience at NCAA Fan Fest at the Cox Convention Center. The Latino American Wrestling Forum, scheduled between Thursday’s first and second sessions at 4:15 p.m. on the main Fan Fest stage, will feature four wrestling greats including 3-time NCAA Champion, World and Olympic Team member Eric Guerrero; Collegiate Women’s National Champion and World Team member Jessica Medina; NCAA All-American, World and Olympic Team member Bill Rosado; and NCAA All-American and Champion Frank Santana.

Another former Latino American wrestler, Noel Thompson, who is now a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame’s Board of Governors, will serve as moderator. The forum is free to the public.

The exhibit at Fan Fest will feature all Latino American Wrestlers who have won NCAA Division I titles and those who have represented the United States on Freestyle and Greco-Roman Senior Teams at the World Championships and Olympic Games.

The Latino American Wrestling exhibit, online book and DVD recording of the forum will be made available as tools for wrestling coaches, parents and fans to interest Latino American youth to take up the sport, Smith said. “Not only will engaging Latinos in the future help strengthen our sport’s growth, but also it is a sport that anyone of any size or gender can participate in and learn from.”

A big thanks to our sponsor USA Wrestling!
