Dan Gable Museum pins down art project with UNI

WATERLOO, Iowa—The greatest sports figure in Iowa is the focal point of a new exhibit at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. The Gable Museum collaborated with the University of Northern Iowa Department of Art for a new display that celebrates the legacy of Dan Gable.

Gable, a native of Waterloo, Iowa, is best known for winning the 1972 Olympics without surrendering a point. He went on to lead the University of Iowa wrestling team to 15 NCAA championship and 21 consecutive Big Ten titles in 21 seasons (1977-1997). There are three statues throughout the state dedicated to Dan Gable’s legacy. On October 25, 2012, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad declared Dan Gable Day statewide.

The posters in this exhibit were designed in the fall semester of 2013 by undergraduate students in a beginning course in graphic design taught by Roy R. Behrens at the University of Northern Iowa. More than 30 current students participated in this pro bono community project in which each student designer was asked to develop three or more posters.

The Graphic Design Major in the UNI Department of Art is well-known for the many awards received by its students, both regional and national.

“Designing the Dan Gable posters was an ideal project for our students,” said Behrens. “It gave them real world design experience, and it was also an opportunity to contribute to the Cedar Valley."

“Our graphic design students have taken on dozens of community projects in recent years. Working on this wrestling poster project was one of the most enjoyable.”

This is the second time the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum has collaborated with the UNI art department. Several UNI art students provided a variety of work for the Gable Museum during the spring semester of 2013. Much of that artwork is still on display.

“It has been a great experience for the UNI Department of Art to collaborate with the Gable Museum on this project,” said Jeffrey Byrd, department head and professor for the UNI art department.  “Our students always benefit from taking on new challenges and this is a terrific opportunity to connect with new audiences.  Wrestling is a big part of Iowa history and culture and I'm happy to see the arts and design connecting with that heritage."
